Louis, XI King of France

M, #23227, b. 3 July 1423, d. 30 August 1483

Biography

  • Louis, XI King of France, was born on 3 July 1423 in Bourges, Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France.
  • He and Margaret Stuart, Dauphine of France, were married on 24 June 1436 at castle of Tours in Tours, Indre-et-Loire, Centre, France.
  • He died on 30 August 1483 at age 60 at Plessis-lès-Tours in Tours, Indre-et-Loire, Centre, France.
  • He was buried after 30 August 1483 at Notre-Dame de Cléry Basilica in Clery-Saint-Andre, Loiret, Centre, France.
  • Louis XI (3 July 1423 – 30 August 1483), called "Louis the Prudent" (French: le Prudent), was King of France from 1461 to 1483. He succeeded his father, Charles VII.
Louis entered into open rebellion against his father in a short-lived revolt known as the Praguerie in 1440. The king forgave his rebellious vassals, including Louis, to whom he entrusted the management of the Dauphiné, then a province in southeastern France. Louis's ceaseless intrigues, however, led his father to banish him from court. From the Dauphiné, Louis led his own political establishment and married Charlotte of Savoy, daughter of Louis, Duke of Savoy, against the will of his father. Charles VII sent an army to compel his son to his will, but Louis fled to Burgundy, where he was hosted by Philip the Good, the Duke of Burgundy, Charles' greatest enemy.
When Charles VII died in 1461, Louis left the Burgundian court to take possession of his kingdom. His taste for intrigue and his intense diplomatic activity earned him the nicknames "the Cunning" (Middle French: le rusé) and "the Universal Spider" (Middle French: l'universelle aragne), as his enemies accused him of spinning webs of plots and conspiracies.
In 1472, the subsequent Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, took up arms against his rival Louis. However, Louis was able to isolate Charles from his English allies by signing the Treaty of Picquigny (1475) with Edward IV of England. The treaty formally ended the Hundred Years' War. With the death of Charles the Bold at the Battle of Nancy in 1477, the dynasty of the dukes of Burgundy died out. Louis took advantage of the situation to seize numerous Burgundian territories, including Burgundy itself and Picardy.
Without direct foreign threats, Louis was able to eliminate his rebellious vassals, expand royal power, and strengthen the economic development of his country. He died on 30 August 1483, and was succeeded by his minor son Charles VIII.
  • Louis, XI King of France, was christened on 4 July 1423 in Bourges, Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France.
  • He held the title of King of France from 22 July 1461 to 1483.

Charles, VIII, King of France

M, #23229, b. 30 June 1470, d. 7 April 1498

Biography

  • Charles, VIII, King of France, was born on 30 June 1470 in Amboise, Indre-et-Loire, Centre, France.
  • He died on 7 April 1498 at age 27 in Amboise, Indre-et-Loire, Centre, France.
  • He was buried in St-Denis, Seine-St-Denis, Île-de-France, France.
  • Charles VIII, called the Affable (French: l'Affable; 30 June 1470 – 7 April 1498), was King of France from 1483 to his death in 1498. He succeeded his father Louis XI at the age of 13.[1] His elder sister Anne acted as regent jointly with her husband Peter II, Duke of Bourbon[1][2] until 1491 when the young king turned 21 years of age. During Anne's regency, the great lords rebelled against royal centralisation efforts in a conflict known as the Mad War (1485–1488), which resulted in a victory for the royal government.
In a remarkable stroke of audacity, Charles married Anne of Brittany in 1491 after she had already been married by proxy to the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I in a ceremony of questionable validity. Preoccupied by the problematic succession in the Kingdom of Hungary, Maximilian failed to press his claim. Upon his marriage, Charles became administrator of Brittany and established a personal union that enabled France to avoid total encirclement by Habsburg territories.
To secure his rights to the Neapolitan throne that René of Anjou had left to his father, Charles made a series of concessions to neighbouring monarchs and conquered the Italian peninsula without much opposition. A coalition formed against the French invasion of 1494–98 attempted to stop Charles' army at Fornovo, but failed and Charles marched his army back to France.
Charles died in 1498 after accidentally striking his head on the lintel of a door at the Château d'Amboise, his place of birth. Since he had no male heir, he was succeeded by his 2nd cousin once removed, Louis XII from the Orléans cadet branch of the House of Valois.
  • Charles, VIII, King of France, held the title of King of France from 30 August 1483 to 7 April 1498.
  • He was crowned on 30 May 1484 in Riems, Champagne, France.
  • He is/was my 14th cousin 13x removed

François I, King of France

M, #23243, b. 12 September 1494, d. 31 March 1547

Biography

  • François I, King of France, was born on 12 September 1494 in Cognac, Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.
  • He died on 31 March 1547 at age 52 in Paris, Ile-de-France, France.
  • He was buried on 31 March 1547 in St-Denis, Seine-St-Denis, Île-de-France, France.
  • François I, King of France, was also known as Francis, I King of France.
  • Francis I (French: François Ier; Middle French: Francoys; 12 September 1494 – 31 March 1547) was King of France from 1515 until his death in 1547. He was the son of Charles, Count of Angoulême, and Louise of Savoy. He succeeded his first cousin once removed and father-in-law Louis XII, who died without a son.
A prodigious patron of the arts, he promoted the emergent French Renaissance by attracting many Italian artists to work for him, including Leonardo da Vinci, who brought the Mona Lisa with him, which Francis had acquired. Francis' reign saw important cultural changes with the growth of central power in France, the spread of humanism and Protestantism, and the beginning of French exploration of the New World. Jacques Cartier and others claimed lands in the Americas for France and paved the way for the expansion of the first French colonial empire.
For his role in the development and promotion of the French language, he became known as le Père et Restaurateur des Lettres (the 'Father and Restorer of Letters'). He was also known as François au Grand Nez ('Francis of the Large Nose'), the Grand Colas, and the Roi-Chevalier (the 'Knight-King') for his personal involvement in the wars against his great rival Emperor Charles V, who was also King of Spain.
Following the policy of his predecessors, Francis continued the Italian Wars. The succession of Charles V to the Burgundian Netherlands, the throne of Spain, and his subsequent election as Holy Roman Emperor, meant that France was geographically encircled by the Habsburg monarchy. In his struggle against Imperial hegemony, Francis sought the support of Henry VIII of England at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. When this was unsuccessful, he formed a Franco-Ottoman alliance with the Muslim sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a controversial move for a Christian king at the time.
  • He held the title of King of France from 1 January 1515 to 31 March 1547.
  • He was crowned on 25 January 1515.

Henri, II King of France

M, #23244, b. 31 March 1519, d. 10 July 1559

Biography

  • Henri, II King of France, was born on 31 March 1519 at Royal Chateau de Saint Germain en Laye in Paris, Ile-de-France, France.
  • He and Catherine de Medici were married on 28 October 1533.
  • He died on 10 July 1559 at age 40 at Palais De Tourne in Paris, Ile-de-France, France.
  • He was buried on 13 August 1559 in St-Denis, Seine-St-Denis, Île-de-France, France.
  • Henri, II King of France, was also known as Henry, II King of France.
  • Henry II (French: Henri II; 31 March 1519 – 10 July 1559) was King of France from 31 March 1547 until his death in 1559. The second son of Francis I, he became Dauphin of France upon the death of his elder brother Francis III, Duke of Brittany, in 1536.
As a child, Henry and his elder brother spent over four years in captivity in Spain as hostages in exchange for their father. Henry pursued his father's policies in matters of art, war, and religion. He persevered in the Italian Wars against the House of Habsburg and tried to suppress the Protestant Reformation, even as the Huguenot numbers were increasing drastically in France during his reign.
The Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559), which put an end to the Italian Wars, had mixed results: France renounced its claims to territories in Italy, but gained certain other territories, including the Pale of Calais and the Three Bishoprics. In addition, even if the Habsburgs maintained a position of primacy, France managed to change the European balance of power by forcing Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor to abdicate during the Eighth Italian War and divide the Habsburg Empire between Spain and Austria.
Henry suffered an untimely death in a jousting tournament held to celebrate the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis. The king's surgeon, Ambroise Paré, was unable to cure the infected wound inflicted by Gabriel de Montgomery, the captain of his Scottish Guard. Though he died early, the succession appeared secure as he left four young sons, as well as a wife in Catherine de' Medici, to lead a capable regency during their minority. Three of those sons would all live long enough to be king themselves, but their ineffectual reigns, and the unpopularity of Catherine's regency, helped to spark the French Wars of Religion between Protestants and Catholics, and an eventual end to the House of Valois as France's ruling dynasty.
  • He held the title of King of France from 31 March 1547 to 10 July 1559.
  • He was crowned on 26 July 1547 in Reims, Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France.
