  • Alice of Saluzzo, Countess of Arundel (died 25 September 1292), also known as Alesia di Saluzzo, was an Italian-born noblewoman and an English countess. She was a daughter of Thomas I of Saluzzo, and the wife of Sir Richard Fitzalan, 8th Earl of Arundel. Alice was the first Italian woman to marry into an English noble family. She attained the title of Countess of Arundel in 1289.

Alice was born on an unknown date in Saluzzo, today in the Province of Cuneo, Piedmont, Italy. She was the second eldest daughter of Thomas I, 4th Margrave of Saluzzo, and Luigia di Ceva (died 22 August 1291/1293).Alice had fifteen siblings. Her father was a very wealthy and cultured nobleman under whose rule, Saluzzo achieved a prosperity, freedom, and greatness it had never known previously.

Alice's paternal grandparents were Manfred III of Saluzzo and Beatrice of Savoy. Her maternal grandparents were Giorgio, Marquis di Ceva and Menzia d'Este.

Sometime before 1285, Alice married Richard Fitzalan, feudal Lord of Clun and Oswestry in the Welsh Marches, the son of John Fitzalan, 7th Earl of Arundel and Isabella Mortimer. Richard would acceed to the title of Earl of Arundel in 1289, thus making Alice the 8th Countess of Arundel. She was the first Italian to marry into an English noble family.

Richard and Alice's principal residence was Marlborough Castle in Wiltshire, but Richard also held Arundel Castle in Sussex and the castles of Clun and Oswestry in Shropshire. Alice's husband was knighted by King Edward I in 1289, and fought in the Welsh Wars (1288-1294), and later in the Scottish Wars.

Alice died on 25 September 1292 and was buried in Haughmond Abbey, Shropshire. Her husband Richard died in 1302 and was buried alongside Alice. In 1341, provision was made for twelve candles to be burned beside their tombs. The Abbey is now a ruin as the result of a fire during the English Civil War.

Her many descendants included the Dukes of Norfolk, Anne Boleyn, Sir Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales.

  • He was buried in 1267 in Shropshire, England.
  • John Fitz Alan, 6th? Earl of Arundel, (if by tenure), though never so referred to either by contemporaries or posterity; on the other hand he is called Lord (ie. feudal possessor) of Arundel Castle by late Nove 1243; fought on Henry III's side at Battle of Lewes 1264, where captured by Simon de Montfort's forces; married Maud, daughter of Theobald le Botiller, and died by 10 Nov 1267. [Burke's Peerage]

    -----------------------------------------------------

EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (IX, 6?) 1243 (title not recognized at the time)

JOHN FITZ ALAN, feudal Lord of Clun and Oswestry, Salop, son and heir of JOHN FITZ ALAN of the same, by his 1st wife, Isabel, 2nd sister and, in her issue, coheir of Hugh, and daughter of William (D'AUBIGNY), Earls of Sussex, &c, succeeded his father (whom his mother had predeceased) in 1240. To him, by writ dated 27 November 1243, was awarded [in right of his deceased mother] the Castle and Honour of Arundel, whereby [according to the admission of 1443] he must be regarded as de jure Earl of Arundel. He obtained possession, 26 May 1244, of his paternal estates in Salop on payment of £1,000. By the title, however, of Earl of Arundel he never appears to have been known [either in his lifetime or afterwards], although he lived 24 years after the acquisition of that Castle and Honour. In an award dated Friday after the Circumcision 1258, he is expressly called Dominus de Arundel [i.e. Lord of the Honour of Arundel], and in the Fine Roll, 10 March 1261/2, he is called Baro noster, while in his IPM he is described [merely] as Johannes filius Alani, and the endorsement says that he held a quarter of the Earldom of Arundel. He took part in the Welsh war in 1258, and, though sometimes leagued with the Barons against the Crown, was, while fighting on the Royal side, taken prisoner at the Battle of Lewes, in 1264, together with the King.

He married Maud, daughter of Theobald Le Botiller, by his 2nd wife, Rohese, daughter and heir of Nicholas De Verdun, of Alton, co. Stafford. He died 1267, before 10 November. Will dated October 1267. His widow married Richard d'Amundeville, and died 27 November 1283. [Complete Peerage I:239-40, XIV:38, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

John Fitz-Alan, in the 28th Henry III [1244], upon the division made of the property of Hugh Albini, Earl of Arundel, then made, had the castle of Arundel assigned to him for his principal seat, thus becoming 5th Earl of Arundel; and soon after that, in consideration of £1,000 fine, had livery of his own castles of Clun, Blancminster and Schrawurthen. In the 42nd Henry III [1258], his lordship was made captain-general of all the forces designed for guarding the Welsh marches, and in the baronial war, he appears first to have sided with the barons, and afterwards with the king. He d. 1267, having m. Maud, dau. of Roesia de Verdun (which lady m. 2ndly Richard de Amundevill), by whom he had a son and successor, John Fitz-Alan. Biography

  • Maud le Botiller was born on 4 September 1225 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.
  • She died on 27 November 1283 at age 58 in Arundel, Sussex, England.
  • The original sources quoted in Medieval Lands are convincing in the argument that Maud's parents were Nicholas Verdun and his second wife, Clementia.

However, Wikipedia and other sources show her parents as Theobald Bulter (le Botiller) and Nicholas' sister, Rohese Verdun. This appears to be a better fit solely on Maud's supposed birthdate (no record found).

As a result, you will see Maud's surname alternately listed as Verdun and Butler, with links to both sets of parents.

    ---------------------------------------------

Burke's Peerage, p. 2098, on Lineage of FitzAlan:

The d'Aubigny male line died out by 1243, whereupon the huge family estates were parcelled out between the last d'Aubigny Earl of Arundel's sisters. Isabel, the second eldest, was wife of John Fitz Alan, who through her came into possession of Arundel Castle but, perhaps significantly, did not style himself Earl of Arundel and was not so referred to by third parties. A contributory factor here seems to have been the longevity of the last d'Aubigny Earl of Arundel's widow, who survived her husband almost forty years and who may in some sense therefore have been regarded as Countess of Arundel in her own right.

William FitzAlan II (d. 1210) was a Norman nobleman who lived in Oswestry and Clun, near Shrewsbury, along the medieval Welsh Marches. William II was the son of William FitzAlan I and Christiana (stepmother was Isabella de Say). His father's second wife brought the lordship of Clun into the family.
He was the first FitzAlan to hold both the castles of Clun and Oswestry in his own right, and was responsible for the significant expansion of Clun Castle. William II was still in his minority in 1160, and Guy Lestrange was appointed as his guardian. William II later had two sons, the first also called William FitzAlan III and a younger son, John. Upon William's death in 1210, the eldest son (William III) seceded his father.
