  • On 26 January 1692, Native Americans under the command of officers from the French Army attacked York, Maine, an event that became known (to the Americans) as the Candlemas Day Massacre. An estimated 150 Abnakis and French Officers entered the town of York, killing about 100 of the English settlers and burning down about 45 buildings. They took an estimated 80 villagers hostage, including Ann Heard and marched them to Montreal as prisoners. She was entrusted to the master-gunsmith Pierre Prud'homme and his wife, baptized and confirmed on 10 April 11692 at the church of Notre-Dame in Montreal. Her godfather was the surgeon Jean Martinet dit Fonblanche and her godmother Anne Châles, the wife of Pierre Prud'homme. Her name was changed from Ann Heard to Marie Anne Herd dit Prévost. On 19 Oct. 1705 she married Sebastien Cholet-Laviolette and had at least 4 children. She died in 1728 in Pointe Claire at the age of 51.

Ann Heard (Marie Anne Herd dite Prévost) was born about 1681 in Cochecho, New England (now Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire). Her parents were Benjamin Heard and Elisabeth Roberts.
On a snowy January morning in 1692, natives attacked York, Maine, an event that became known as the Candlemas Day Massacre. The Candlemas Massacre took place during King William's War, when an estimated 150 Abenakis commanded by officers of New France entered the town of York, killing about 100 of the English settlers and burning down buildings, taking another estimated 80 villagers hostage, on a forced walk to Canada.
The natives killed dozens of inhabitants and burned forty of the forty-five house to the ground. Ann Heard was captured on January 26, 1692, during the Candlemas Massacre and brought back to Montreal as a prisoner. She was entrusted to the master-gunsmith Pierre Prud'homme and his wife. She was baptized and confirmed on April 10th 1694 at the church of Notre-Dame in Montreal. Her godfather was the surgeon Jean Martinet dit Fonblanche and her godmother Anne Châles, the wife of Pierre Prud'homme. Her name was changed from Ann Heard to Marie Anne Prévost. Her new adoptive parents were Jean Prévost and Françoise Lamontagne.
She married Sébastien Cholet dit Laviolette on October 19, 1705. They had 11 children: Marie Anne (m. Jean Baptiste Legault Deslauriers), Jean Baptiste (m. Marie Anne Faucher Foucher), Marie Marthe (m. Jean Baptiste Theoret), Marie Josephe (died at 11 months), Joseph Sebastien, Marie Josephe (died at 3 weeks), Sebastien, Jacques Louis Sebastien (died at 12 years), Joseph Antoine (died at 1 month), Marie Josephe (died 1 month before 8th birthday), Jacques (m. Marie Antoinette Amable Legault Deslauriers). They remained married until his death on April 14, 1728. He was buried in Pointe-Claire. (children born to her and Sébastien Cholet, 4 are known to die young and 4 to marry)
Marie Anne then married Claude Sensar Picard on August 1, 1730. This union produced no children as Marie Anne was now 50 years old. Claude Sensar Picard died December 25, 1739, and was buried in Pointe Claire.
January 2, 1750, Marie Anne was buried in Pointe-Claire, Canada.[1]. Her exact date of death is unknown; she was recorded as being approximately 70 years old and of English origins.
