He inherited his fathers land holdings in Oka and became a farmer. The local Iroquois natives held him in high esteem, naming him "Satewas" meaning "it is the same". He and his wife Charlotte Sabourin had 12 children, eight or their daughters became "Nuns".
Jennifer Sneirson states that his first marriage was to Marie Louise Amable Sabourin, and she gives her birth date as Sept. 12, 1767 in Oka. I cannot find any other evidence to support this first marriage.
